To All:
We just got back from the CAF '94 show late last night. I will be catching up
on the recent questions posted here soon.
A few announcements...
1. STraight FAX! V2.20 is now "generally available" or GA as the industry
likes to use. To upgrade from V2.xx to V2.20, send your name, address, 10
digit Registration Number and $5 to the following address: STraight FAX! 2.20
Upgrade P.O. Box 122 Columbia, Maryland 21045-0122
Do not include your original STraight FAX! Master Disk. An additional upgrade
disk will be mailed to you that includes the upgrade.
2. The winner of the STraight FAX! 2.20 at the CAF '94 show was... (drum
roll)...
Al Fasoldt
Al now owns 2 copies of STraight FAX!. Al, please send me private GEMail to
discuss arrangements for sending you your door prize.

Al,
I didn't think it was in the manual. I thought it was something new from the
latest upgrade.
Unfortunately I seldom pick up the manuals after I get going on a program. I'm
just really tired of trying to figure out how to make programs to what they
do. I just want to use them.
Computer manual burnout...I think that's what it's called.
>As a DA or PRG, it runs in the background under Geneva. Just let it run. If
>you use NeoDesk, the Neo desktop will cover up STFAX when STFAX is in the
>background. If you don't have a desktop that is multitasking (ahem, there
are
>none except Neo), then STFAX will be put to sleep when you access your
>desktop.
So if I don't have Neo then you can't just leave it running to collect faxes
right. Or will it accept faxes when used as a DA.

Steve,
Yes! Straight Fax! will accept faxes when run as a DA... but I think this is
only if you run it with Geneva. (I'm to beat tonight to look it up in the
manual!) It will sit there quietly until a fax is recognized, then it
receives it, and returns you to your 'normally scheduled program'.
I have not run it as a DA in some time so again, I'm not sure if control is
wrested away from any app you would be using at the time a fax is received,
but I do remember, and know, that it does work.
Of course, you must have it set to Auto-Receive.

I've had problems but I think they were pilot error and assisted by GEMENV
confusion or confused environment parameters under HOTWIRE. HOTWIRE and GEMENV
don't talk to each other.

Steve,
Sorry for confusing you. I write those manuals you get tired of reading <g>
and understand what you mean.
NeoDesk has nothing to do with whether STFAX runs in the background and so on.
I was just pointing out that the Atari desktop will cover up STFAX's desktop
when it is running in the background. Right now, the only desktop that lets
you run STFAX.PRG in the background is NeoDesk, so that's why I mentioned Neo.
STFAX.ACC runs in the background on any system, any desktop. I prefer to run
it as a PRG under Geneva and NeoDesk, because it's easier to use that way;
Charles may want to look into changing the way STFAX's menus work when it is
run as a DA. (I'd much rather see them in a GEM menu bar, like so many German
programmers do and like STalker does, as a DA.)
Matt,
Shame! Didn't a little of the Gizmotron wear off on you at CAF? <g> STFAX
doesn't need Geneva to run in the background as a DA. :-)

Hi!
I got version 2.2 and Speedogdos 5.0 at the CT Fair. I'm still
having problems printing out faxes. The fax converts to an IMG
alright, but won't print. I either get garbage or the program
bombs. I'm using an HP DJ500. I tried using Speedogdos 4.1 which
came with Works and it printed perfectly. Any ideas what to
try next?

I am having a problem printing from straight fax with FONT GDOS, and every
other GDos for that matter. What is interesting is that I can print the IMG
that were created from the convert utility (also creating the GEM) from the
Migraph output.prg. Do I need to make the print utility do anything special
such as when it converts its FAX to IMG also make a GEM file? If so how is
that done?
I went to font GDOS as my old turbo deskjet drivers did not work all the time
with the Deskjet 500. I am using the latest Straight FAX program.

Charles,
After the long ordeal of getting the previous owner of my copy of
Straight Fax 1.07 to send you a letter of transfer my Straight Fax is now
reregistered. Approximately 3 weeks ago I sent off to Toad for version 2.2. I
have been in touch with Toad several times since they received my order and
was told RSN everytime except today. Today I was informed that due to some
changes made by you that they now have to waite for the v2.2 upgrades to be
sent to them (whereas before they could perform the upgrades themselves) and
that in fact that is what they are waiting on now. Could you please let me
(maybe there are others also) know what the status of my upgrade to 2.2?

Charles,
I recently installed the update to STraight Fax! 2.20 and noticed something.
This has to do with running STraight Fax! under Geneva DB.
Every menu item, dialog box, and file selector generates an alert from Geneva
DB about unknown graf_mouse type -3276.
Every item in the dialogs also cause Geneva DB to respond with the alert I
mentioned above.
Any finally, when quitting the program, I get an alert from Geneva DB stating:
lfree: could not find arena for block.
Since I run with Geneva DB most of the time (I develop under it to catch these
type of problems myself), I hope that these things can be addressed.

way to increase the timeout period and is there a way to force/push the start

You will likely need to disable silent answer. All applications I
have seen that check a modem port for a ring detect steal data. With Aladdin
a single character missing will result in garbage.

Damien,
I'm running under Geneva and tend to leave STFAX running in the background.
In order to avoid conflicts with Aladdin, however, I run Aladdin as a
Singletasking application. This automatically puts Straight Fax to sleep and
does not cause a problem. The only hitch is that when I finish with Aladdin I
have to go back into STFAX and have it re-initialize the modem in order to
restore my Silent answer settings. This is quite easy by going to the RECEIVE
FAX item in the PREFERENCES menu, opening it, and then closing it while
holding the Alternate key. Hope this helps.

Long post warning...
>>To all STraight FAX! 2 owners:
STraight FAX! V2.20 upgrades are available as follows:
Send your name, address, the 10 digit Registration Number and $5.00 (US funds
only) to the following address:
STraight FAX! 2.20 Upgrade P.O. Box 122 Columbia, Maryland 21045-0122 USA
Do not include your original STraight FAX! 2 Master Disk. The 2.20 upgrade
will be mailed to you on a new upgrade disk.
For upgrade orders outside of North America please add $2.00 (US) for shipping
costs.
In addition, upgrades may be ordered via credit card by calling Toad Computers
at 410-544-6943 and providing the information above, along with a major credit
card number. Credit Card orders may also be sent to our GEMail address of
"C.S.SMETON" on GEnie.
Please allow two weeks for delivery.
No version 2.20 upgrade orders will be processed unless a valid STraight FAX!
2 Registration Card has been previously received.
As of this time all upgrade orders received have been processed with the
exception of one or two that forgot to include the Registration Number, which
are being processed this week.
There are a few "new" features in the official STraight FAX! 2.20 release that
were not in the STraight FAX! 2.20 Pre-Release that was sent in GEMail a few
months ago:
- If Auto Receive is enabled or if a Scheduled Event is
Pending or In Progress and Scheduling is not paused, then
the program will automatically close an open dialog box,
cancelling the operation (i.e. exit as if the Cancel button
is selected) after 5 minutes of inactivity. This allows
the program to resume normal operation if a dialog is
accidentally left on the screen. Note: there is no method
that allows the program to timeout from an Alert Box, the File
Selector or a menu that has dropped down from the Menu
Bar.
- An activated Popup Menu will now automatically close (as if
the selection was cancelled) after 60 seconds of inactivity.
- In a View Window, the Clip Area can be restored to its previous
state via the Undo key. This allows restoring the previous Clip
Area when the Clip Area is accidentally changed.
- In a View Window, the contents of a Clip Area may be copied or moved
to another area within the image without using the Clipboard.
If either Shift Key is held down when dragging a Clip Area to a new
position, the mouse cursor will change to a solid cross shape.
When the left mouse button is released, the contents of the Clip Area
prior to the drag operation will be copied into the new Clip Area's
location.
If the Control Key is held down when dragging a Clip Area to a new
position, the mouse cursor will change to an outlined cross shape.
When the left mouse button is released, the contents of the Clip Area
prior to the drag operation will be moved into the new Clip Area's
location.
If the 'Prompt for Options when Pasting' Check Box is enabled in the
Clipboard Paste Options, then the Clipboard Paste Options dialog will
be displayed, allowing the 'Paste Mode' to be changed before doing
the copy or move operation. The copy or move operation may also be
cancelled. If the operation is cancelled, the Clip Area will revert
to its previous location.
The other Check Box parameters in the Clipboard Paste Options dialog
will have no effect on the copy or move operation as the size
of the source and destination Clip Areas are the same. If the Clip Area
is not moved (i.e. source and destination are identical), then
no copy or move operation will take place.
- STraight FAX! will now check for Mag!X (from 2B in Germany) Multi-tasking
AES replacement and disable using submenus or 3D objects as these
are not supported yet by Mag!X (although it reports an AES
version of 3.99, which indicates that these features should
be available). Mag!X will also be recognized as a Multi-tasking
AES and allow operation similar to that under Geneva or Multi-TOS.
- The problem that caused a Memory Violation error that killed
the STFAX process when initializing the FAX modem into Receive
FAX mode has been corrected.
- Cover Page Entry:
The 'Clear' button will clear all the fields in the Cover Page.
- Two new Error Alert messages will now be displayed:
"Error: Unable to execute the Speedo GDOS Printer Drivers utility!"
is displayed if STraight FAX! is unable to execute the Speedo GDOS
Printer Drivers utility (DRIVERS.PRG). The usual cause of this
problem is that the DRIVERS.PRG file is not located in the GDOS
folder (as specified by the PATH= line in the ASSIGN.SYS file) or a
folder that is listed in the PATH= Environment Variable.
Solution: Copy/move the DRIVERS.PRG file into the GDOS folder or a
folder that is listed in the PATH= Environment Variable.
"Error: Unable to execute the External Text Editor program!"
is displayed if STraight FAX! is unable to execute the External Text
Editor program specified in the File Preferences dialog. Verify that
the External Text Editor program file exists as configured.
- The FAX Send/Receive Receive Log Information dialog - The Entry number
field now displays the current entry number and the total number of
entries:
i.e.
Entry: 100 of 205
- Fixed problem with program asking to save the preferences when exiting
after the have been saved and not changed.
- Added new 'Sub Menus' Checkbox to the General Preferences to disable the use
of SubMenus (Hierarchical Menus). This Checkbox will be hidden from
view if the AES version in use does not support Sub Menus. Some third
party AES replacements do not handle Sub Menus properly in their early
releases. Disabling Sub Menus will allow operation with these AES
replacements.
- Added new 'Display Dialogs' Popup Menu to the General Preferences to
specify where dialogs are positioned. This popup has the following
choices:
At Last Position - Displays a dialog at the last position that it
was displayed at (This is how the program
had operated previously). This option
allows specifying the position that a
particular dialog will always be displayed.
Centered About Mouse - Displays a dialog centered about the mouse,
but constrained to the Desktop area. This
option will reduce the mouse movement when
using high resolution graphics display
(i.e. Moniterm and other graphics cards).
Centered on Desktop - Displays a dialog centered on the Desktop.
- Added a 'None' option to the Desktop Popup Menu in the Desktop
Preferences. The 'None' selection will disable the custom STraight
FAX! Desktop and use the default system Desktop. This may be
desirable when using a Multi-Tasking AES (i.e. Multi-TOS).
When the 'None' option is selected, the Color and Fill selectors
will be hidden from view.
>>To all:
STraight FAX! 2.10 and 2.20 can be run as a Desk Accessory (memory and
available desk accessory slots permitting) under normal TOS, MultiTOS, Geneva,
Mag!X, etc. It can also be installed from MultiDesk/MultiDesk Deluxe, but it
is should be installed as a resident accessory in order to receive FAXes while
a GEM application is running.
When installed as a desk accessory, the Auto Receive mode will check for an
incoming RING on the modem and "take over" for the time that the FAX is being
received. Upon completion of the call, the control is returned to the GEM
application running.
Note: under Multitasking AES versions, the same functionality is available by
running STraight FAX! as a program.
>>To all:
Printing (received) FAX files via GDOS:
FAX files should print properly under all versions of GDOS, i.e. Atari GDOS
1.1, Font GDOS, FSM GDOS, Speedo GDOS 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 and 5.0, as well as the
available GDOS replacements. The problem most people experience is lack of
available memory and the proper GDOS printer driver for the type of GDOS and
printer in use.
With the exception of the SLM Laser GDOS printer drivers, the other printer
drivers return no status code of why a driver failed to load or print, paper
jam, out of paper, etc. Most likely the reason for a failure is the lack of
memory. It is best to check the available RAM while STraight FAX! is running
by using a utility such as the General CPX in XControl. To this subtract the
approximate size of the GDOS printer driver .SYS file. The remainder is the
approximate amount of memory available for printing. For 300 DPI devices such
as DeskJets and LaserJets, 1 Meg free is what is recommended to have available
for printing.
Speedo 4.X and 5.X seem to use the same printer drivers, but Speedo 5.X does
use more memory that 4.X, which may be the reason for printing problems.
The printer drivers for the original GDOS are available from a number of
sources and some may not work very well and are very slow in printing. The
Font GDOS and Speedo GDOS drivers available from Atari and Compo are generally
alot faster and less buggier than the original GDOS drivers. The one exception
is the HP DeskJet 500 driver in Font GDOS which has a serious bug that causes
it to emit page after page with random characters. This problem was corrected
in the Speedo GDOS release of the HP DeskJet 500 driver.
Note: The HP LaserJet driver may work with a DeskJet, but the LaserJet driver
will be alot slower because it does not use the PCL Level IV compression mode
for the bitmapped printer data that the DeskJet drivers use.
If you are memory limited, try exporting the FAX files to IMG files in
STraight FAX! and try printing with another program, such as GEM Output/
Migraph Outprint and GDOS, or Calamus. Note when using Output/Outprint, be
sure to have the Meta File Generation check box enabled in the Conversion
Preferences dialog, so that the .GEM file is created with the .IMG file.
>>To all:
Generating FAX files (for sending) via GDOS:
The STraight FAX! Speedo GDOS printer driver should work with Speedo 5.X as
well as Speedo 4.X. Again, memory limitation problems may be experienced when
using Speedo 5.X, due to its larger size.

This is not a quirk of Geneva, it is simply Geneva doing exactly what the
Atari AES 3.30 and higher does in a Falcon or MultiTOS. Older AES'es dont
support hierarchical menus on the menu bar, so STraight FAX! "simulates"
them by popping up a second popup menu after the menu bar command is
selected.
The hierarchical submenus appear to the right of the "->" right arrow
character
in menu items. In STraight FAX! under older AES versions, the right arrow is
changed to a down arrow to indicate that the submenu will popup below the
mouse after the menu item is selected.
In 2.20, the hierarchical submenus can be turned off in the General
Preferences
by not enabling the Sub Menus check box (this check box is hidden if an
AES prior to 3.30 is in use).
As for personal preference, the hierarchical submenu concept is used on alot
of GUI's including MS Windows, X Windows, Macs, etc.
To: J.KRZYSZTOW,
>Every menu item, dialog box, and file selector generates an alert from
Geneva
>DB about unknown graf_mouse type -3276.
I suspect that the mouse type number is being truncated and is actually in
the range of -32767 to -32760. The reason for this is a new feature that
Atari added to the AES as of 4.00, that _should_ be supported in Geneva. If
you
logically OR 0x8000 to the mouse number in the graf_mouse call, it forces
the mouse form to be changed in a multitasking environment. This is
documented by Atari in the MultiTOS docs for graf_mouse and is also in
the Atari Compendium.
STraight FAX! will use this feature when necessary if AES 4.00 is detected,
which is the AES version that Geneva reports.
> Any finally, when quitting the program, I get an alert from Geneva DB

I am not sure what causes this, but I will look in to it.

The Wait till Connect value will increase the timeout on a connection. This
is in the Dialing Preferences.
It sounds like you are talking about Manual FAX Sending, which is when you
call voice first and then wait for a FAX carrier, and then start the send
process. This covered on page 65 (Quick Dial) in the STraight FAX! 2.0
manual.
To: R.JANSSEN1,
> I find that running aladdin with STraight Fax installed as a desk accessory

> this one? -Damian
Aladdin bypasses TOS to talk to the modem ports. It should not be run at the
same time as STraight FAX!. In addition, Auto Receive should not be enabled
if you are trying to use another program to access the same serial port that
STraight FAX! is set to.
This is a major limitation of TOS, i.e. resource locking and sharing. In
2.20, STraight FAX! has a new parameter to enable checking the Carrier
Detect (CD) signal prior to trying to access the modem. If the CD is
active, it usually indicates that the modem is in use.
Anytime more than one program tries to read data from the same serial port
at the same time, one will "steal" a few bytes of data from the other and
confuse both. This is what occurs if STalker is running at the same time
as STraight FAX!. The solution is to disable Auto Receive when using
STalker and to disable STalker when using STraight FAX! to send or receive.
To: M.RIVMAN1,
> Though I have never run Aladdin and STraight Fax! together, I do know that
> Aladdin likes to hog the modem and settings. There was a time I would have
to
> switch the modem off and on again between ST Fax and Aladdin usage.
This problem may not be due to Aladdin, but rather to the FAX Modem firmware.
There is a bug in some older (1992-1993) Rockwell based FAX Modems (Supra,
Zoom, Boca, etc.) where after a data connection, one of the FAX commands
sends garbage when it is sent during modem initialization. This only occurs
in Class 2 mode. The solution is to toggle the modem power to clear the
modem's memory out.
To: T.CARMAN,
In the situation that you describe, i.e. placing STraight FAX! to sleep while
using Aladdin (or any other terminal program), it will be necessary to
re-initialize the Auto Receive mode since STraight FAX! does not know that
the modem has been reset by the terminal program.
Note: Auto Receive mode can be toggled off and on with the Control-Alternate-
F
key sequence in STraight FAX! 2.20.
To: S.AGARWAL,
> 1. I am using STraight Fax v. 2.1. I received the pre-release 2.2 version

We no longer send out EMail updates due to an unfortunate situation that
occured a few months ago. Please see my earlier message for info on upgrading
to the official 2.20 release.
> 2. There seems to be a conflict using v.2.1 as a *.PRG and STalker as
an
> *.ACC. I keep getting the message " modem not responding". I have Stalker
> 3.00 and perhaps that is the problem. Any ideas?
This problem is most likely due to the fact that you have a computer with
a SCC based serial port that is capable of baud rates of higher than 19200
baud and you have a modem capable of a DTE-DCE rate in excess of 19200
baud (i.e. a V.32bis 14400 baud FAX Modem). While the Mega STe, TT030 and
Falcon030 have the higher speed SCC based ports, the TOS/XBIOS Rsconf
call does not support setting the baud rate higher than 19200 baud. To
achieve this STalker must bypass the XBIOS and program the SCC chip's
registers directly. If you do this and then Disable STalker with its
disable command, the registers of the SCC chip are left in a state that
the XBIOS does not expect and as such it cant set the baud rate properly
with the Rsconf call (which is what STraight FAX! uses since it does not
set the baud rate higher than 19200 baud).
The solution for now is to set STalker to 19200 baud, then disable STalker
when it is resident at the same time as STraight FAX!.

To: K.ESTES,
Ken, STraight FAX! 2.x has a Manual Send option that does just what your
question asked. To initiate a Manual Send, you must have the Phone List
parameter in the General Preferences set to Quick Dial. The Quick Dial dialog
(see p65 in the manual) will appear instead of the Phone List after the
files/cover page have been setup for the transfer. You can still get to the
normal Phone List from the Quick Dial, but in addition there is a Manual Send
button. You can also get to the Quick Dial (overriding the normal Phone List)
by holding the Control Key as you exit the File Selector (single file
transfer), Multiple Files dialog or Cover Page Parameters dialog.
The Manual Send process is very simple. Call as a normal voice call, then
select the files and select the Manual Send command in the Quick Dial. The FAX
Send Status will be displayed and prompt you to hit a key to start the Manual
Send. On the "other side", the person is doing a Manual Receive or the
equivalent for whatever other FAX program may be in use or FAX Machine/FAX on
Demand system.

To: S.BLACKBURN,
The submenus appearing to the right of the menu that has dropped down from the
menu bar is the way it is supposed to operate under Geneva, MultiTOS and
FalconTOS (i.e. AES versions >= 3.30). This is exactly how many other GUI's
handle submenus.
On older AES versions (< 3.30), there is no way for the submenu to
automatically appear to the right of the menu item with the "->" right arrow
character on the right hand side of the menu. The effect of submenus was
created on older AES versions by displaying a popup up menu (similar to those
in dialog boxes) on menu items with a down arrow character on the right side
after the menu item is selected and the GEM menu has disappeared.
In 2.20 the user has a choice under the new AES versions: maintain the way
submenus are simulated under older AES versions or use the new hierarchical
submenu capability of the new AES versions.

I tried to install the new version that arrived yesterday, and the program
cancels out with the message that it can't find the font folder. I deleted the
old font folder and files because the new disk had new font stuff, and
transferred the new font files as they were on the upgrade disk. What do I do?
I didn't see any specific installation instructions.
I was disappointed not to be able to send a FAX this morning before the phone
rates went up. I guess I can put my previous version back in.

Type ATi3 at your terminal screen - the modem should return the firmware
revision number. (Mine is 1.80-03.) Charles will know what the latest is, or
whether the one you have should be upgraded.

Charles,
I'm having a bit of trouble configuring STraight Fax as an accessory under
Geneva. I have set the environment variable in the GEM.CNF file as per the
instructions in the Readme file for version 2.1, but the accessory will not
recognize the command.
If I do not run Geneva and instead run GEMENV.PRG to set the environment
variable everything runs fine; STFAX.ACC sees the configuration file in my
directory E:\STFAX220 and loads with all the correct settings. Unfortunately,
running both Geneva and GEMENV.PRG does not solve the problem.
I notice that when I use GEMENV.PRG the mouse shape changes during the boot
process when STFAX.ACC is loading. It changes to a disk symbol and then to
the FAX symbol with the word FAX inside and then back to my regular pointer.
When I run Geneva, however, the pointer only changes briefly to the disk
symbol and then back to the regular pointer, and it does not find the
configuration file.
Perhaps you can shed some light on this if I am doing something wrong.
Otherwise you may want to investigate and fix this apparent bug. Thanks.

Charles,
Subsequent to my message earlier this evening. On reading over my message
again I realized that I had left the impression the problem was with STraight
Fax. I realize that this is not necessarily the case and that the problem may
just as likely be with Geneva. I will leave a note for Dan Wilga in the

I have a question about using STraight FAX! with Geneva. I've noticed that
the scheduler is always activated when I'm using STFAX under Geneva. This box
is unselected in my regular HotWire setup. I rarely scedule a FAX, so I don't
need the short delay it causes. Is this the way it's supposed to behave when
multitasking?

Charles, the Readme file says that
"If the Control Key is held down when the Receive FAX item in the Preferences
menu is selected (or Control-Alternate-F is pressed), the Auto Receive mode
will change as follows:
If Auto Receive is Disabled, it will change to Always Enabled.
If Auto Receive is Always Enabled, it will change to Disabled.
If Auto Receive is Selectively Enabled, it will change to Disabled.
The FAX Modem will be initialized/reset as required and the Auto Receive
indicators will be updated."
Under Geneva, this works fine if I hold down the control key while selecting
the Receive FAX item in the Preferences menu. However, under Geneva, when I
press Control-Alternate-F, all that happens is that the receive fax
preferences dialog box is displayed. On the other hand, if I don't run
Geneva, then when I press Control-Alternate-F, it works fine.
Does this work for anyone else who has the Geneva/Neodesk 4 combination?

Just today, I did have someone tell me he received an unreadable file. I had

I (we) finally got my external Pract. Periph. 14.4 and his internal to connect

attempt at receiving my send, I got a telephone call.... "what do I try now?!"
I don't know why he couldn't receive my stuff. I can send to his Sharp

Heck, his internal 14.4 wouldn't even work at 9600b.

Has anyone experienced the following problem with STFAX.
I can't seem to get a ascii to fax to show up as legible when trying to view
the page. The characters displayed are garbage. All a garbled mess. When
viewing the cover page, it appears to display the same problem.
I actually sent my first fax without viewing, and it arrived looking the same
way that the View menu displays it.
I suspect that I am doing something wrong, or have not set things up
correctly. I just got the program last week, so need to go back to the

Anyway, I thought I would ask here in case someone has already been through

I'm using version 5.0b of Speedo and when I print using the STraight Fax

I've had this happen a couple of times, with both ingoing and outgoing
faxes, not using Calamus, and not even using STraight Fax.
I had it happen several times sending to one Fax machine, though it most
often doesn't do it. I received on streched out fax once with the fax/modem (I
think running Mac software).
I though it must be a combination of line noise and certain fax machines
where the machine gets confused about resolutions.

The STraight FAX! CPX is only used to configure your STFAX drivers. In the
case of Calligrapher, with the driver in CALFONTS, you find your driver and
configure it to write your FAX (J0?) file to your STFAX directory. You can
also specify the default name of the file. I use CAL3_FAX.J0?.

worked as expected. I will be getting information off to Ralf in this regard,
to see if a solution might be possible.
I narrowed it down to the drivers by removing everything else from my system

STraight FAX! 2.20 Tech Support Notes
=====================================
(C) 1994 NewSTar Technology Management
11/13/94
Note:
The following recommendations are based on test results that we
have conducted at NewSTar Technology Management. These
recommendations have proven successful in our testing.
Individual results may vary, depending on the computer model,
TOS version, serial port used, FAX Modem, etc.
1. The STraight FAX! Master disk contains 3 patch programs (from
Atari) that are for the following computers/TOS versions:
a) TOS14FX2.PRG TOS 1.04 (520 ST, 520STFM 1040ST, Mega ST2/4 & STacy)
b) SERPTCH2.PRG TOS 2.05 (Mega STe) TOS 3.05 (TT030)
c) FPATCH2.PRG TOS 4.00-4.04 (Falcon030)
If you have one of these TOS versions, the STraight FAX! 2.20
Installation program will detect this and display a dialog box
that will allow for installation of the proper patch.
If you do not know how to determine the TOS version in your computer,
please refer to #15 below.
2. There are additional patch programs that either replace or
work in addition to the Atari patch programs, depending on the
TOS version in use.
If the computer is any model prior to a Falcon030, i.e. any ST,
Mega ST, STe, Mega STe or TT030 model, with a TOS version of
1.00 through 3.06, then the Serial Fix 2.0 third party patch
program is recommended for installation in the AUTO folder. This
should be used in place of one of the above Atari patch programs
for TOS versions 1.04, 2.05 or 3.05 and should also be used for
other TOS versions (1.00, 1.02, 1.06, 1.062, 2.06, 3.06).
Use of RTS/CTS Flow Control requires the Serial Fix 2.0 patch to
be installed in the AUTO folder.
Serial Fix 2.0 includes a CPX module that allows locking the
RTS/CTS Flow Control mode on the serial port (Modem Port/Modem
1). STraight FAX! versions 2.00 and higher will override the
RTS/CTS lock when accessing the Serial Port and restore the
state of the RTS/CTS lock afterwards.
Note: Do not install Serial Fix 2.0 at the same time as either
TOS14FX2 or SERPTCH2. Serial Fix 2.0 contains the capabilities
of these patch programs, so they should not be installed with
Serial Fix 2.0, otherwise these patches may conflict with Serial
Fix 2.0.
Serial Fix 2.0 (SERFX20.LZH) is available from our support BBS
and from the Atari ST support areas on major on-line services.
The file listing for Serial Fix 2.0 on GEnie is listed below:
Number: 27506
Name: SERFX20.LZH
Address: BPENNER
Date: 930130
Approximate # of bytes: 10880
Number of Accesses: 521
Library: 2
Description:
Serial Fix 2.0 is a patch program to correct a couple problems
with use of ST/STe/TT Modem 1 port (or the only serial port for
older ST's) with high speed modems requiring RTS/CTS operation.
This version also includes SERPATCH and TOS14FIX from Atari and
will automatically implement what fixes are required for your
version of TOS. Serial Fix 2.0 is a universal fix and works
with TOS versions 1.0 through 2.06 and 3.0 through 3.06

Keywords: serial,fix,patch,rs232,modem,serpatch,tos14fix
3. If the computer is a Falcon030 with TOS versions 4.00 through
4.04, then the Atari patch FPATCH2.PRG should be installed in
the AUTO folder. When FPATCH2.PRG is installed, the Serial Port
used by STraight FAX! should be set to "Device 7 (Modem Port)".
Device 6 should not be used, as it is not connected to any
physical RS-232 connector on the Falcon030.
The Bconmap Fix 2 third party patch program is recommended to be
installed in the AUTO folder so that it runs after FPATCH2.PRG.
Bconmap Fix 2 will allow STraight FAX! (and other applications)
to work with Device 6 or Device 7 as the Serial Port on the
Falcon030.
Bconmap Fix 2 (BMAPFIX2.LZH) is available from our support BBS
and from the Atari ST support areas on major on-line services.
The file listing for Bconmap Fix 2 on GEnie is listed below:
Number: 30081
Name: BMAPFIX2.LZH
Address: H.CARSON1
Date: 930918
Approximate # of bytes: 2688
Number of Accesses: 168
Library: 2
Description:
This is the latest version of the Bconmap Fix program for the
Falcon Auto Folder. It can also be run as a program from the
desktop. It should be plac aced after FPATCH2.PRG in your Auto
Folder. It is a final (hopefully!) serial port fix.
---------------
Note: Sysop unable to verify proper operation of file.
Use Quester's LHARC201 (lh5) to extract.
Keywords: Falcon,Bconmap,Auto,FPATCH2,Serial port,
4. STraight FAX! will operate will all TOS versions known to
date, including TOS 1.00 through TOS 4.04 and MultiTOS. However
for optimal operation of RS-232 and File I/O, a newer TOS
version is strongly recommended.
For 520 ST, 520STFM, Mega ST 2/4 and STacy computers, TOS 1.04
can be installed in either a 2 chip or 6 chip configuration.
For 520 ST, 520STFM, Mega ST 2/4 and STacy computers, TOS 2.06
can be installed in either a 2 chip configuration using an
add-on card, such as the TEC board from Codehead Technologies.
For the STe and MegaSTe, TOS 2.06 can be installed in 2 chip
configuration.
For the TT030, TOS 3.06 can be installed in 2 chip configuration.
For the Falcon030, TOS 4.04 can be installed in a single chip
configuration.

Please contact your Atari dealer for TOS upgrade availability.
5. STraight FAX! supports both older FAX Modems that do not
support automatic baud rate sensing and newer FAX Modems (such
as those that support V.42bis, V.32 and V.32bis Data
communications) that do support automatic baud rate sensing.
If the FAX Modem supports automatic baud rate sensing, then the
Auto Baud parameter in the Modem Preferences should be enabled.
This will allow for faster initialization of the FAX Modem. If
FAX modem does not support automatic baud rate sensing, then the
Auto Baud parameter should be disabled.
While most FAX Modems that support automatic baud rate sensing,
will operate with the Auto Baud parameter in either state, there
are some FAX Modems that support automatic baud rate sensing,
that will not properly initialize if the Auto Baud parameter is
disabled. In particular, the Zoom AFX and other FAX Modems based
on the same Rockwell FAX Modem chipset require that the Auto
Baud parameter be enabled. These FAX Modems are Class 1 only FAX
Modems that send at a maximum baud rate of 9600 baud, but
receive at a maximum baud rate of 4800 baud and are 2400 baud
data modems. This is a relatively inexpensive FAX Modem by
current standards and sells in the under $100 range.
6. The RS-232 communications can also be enhanced by increasing
the size of the RS-232 I/O Buffers for the specified Serial
Port. Increasing the I/O Buffers can be accomplished using an
external utility such as the AUXINIT.PRG (placed in the AUTO
folder) that comes with Gribnif's STalker 3 terminal program.
STraight FAX! also allows increasing the I/O Buffer sizes in the
Modem Preferences. Increase the size up to 32767 bytes for both
the Input and Output buffers for maximum throughput.
7. Older model US Robotics Sportster FAX Modems will have
problems connecting to certain FAX Machines, such as Pitney
Bowes FAX Machines. These Sportsters can be identified by the
serial number on the bottom of the FAX Modem.
If the serial number starts with 00026801 or higher for the
Sportster 14400 FAX Modem or 00026501 for the Sportster 9600 FAX
Modem, then the Sportster is a newer model. Please contact US
Robotics if the Sportster is an older model.
If the Sportster is a newer model, then a special Init String
must be entered into the Modem Preferences to allow proper
connection to Pitney Bowes FAX Machines. This special Init
String is:
S36=0
and should only be present when connecting to a Pitney Bowes FAX
Machine.
8. STraight FAX! requires exclusive use of the specified serial
port when sending or receiving Faxes. Other resident programs
can interfere with STraight FAX!'s ability to communicate with
the serial port. In particular if another terminal program is
resident in memory, it may "steal" bytes arriving at the serial
port away from STraight FAX! and cause it to fail to properly
communicate and/or fail to initialize the FAX Modem.
If another program is using the same serial port as STraight
FAX!, try one or more of the following:
- If the conflicting program has an internal disable feature,
activate the disable feature when using STraight FAX!.
- If the conflicting program can be set to another serial port
(on computers with multiple serial ports), then set the program
to use a different serial port when using STraight FAX!.
- If the above does not solve the problem, quit the conflicting
program or disable it from running it is a desk accessory (i.e.
such as Gribnif's STalker 3 terminal program that also runs as
a desk accessory).
With the advent of Atari's MultiTOS, Gribnif's Geneva and the
Mag!X multitasking operating systems and with the capability to
run STraight FAX! as a desk accessory (as of version 2.10),
many combinations can exist where both STraight FAX! and
another program that uses a serial port are active at the same
time.
9. Screen Saver programs should be configured to watch for
RS-232 activity so that the Screen Saver does not activate while
STraight FAX! is sending or receiving a FAX. If the Screen Saver
activates while a FAX transfer is in progress, it may use
sufficient CPU time to interfere with STraight FAX! Depending on
the Screen Saver in use, the method it uses to detect RS-232
activity may or may not detect the RS-232 activity of STraight
FAX!
Note: While STraight FAX! is waiting to send or receive a FAX,
operation of a Screen Saver should not cause any problems, as
long as the Screen Saver deactivates when RS-232 activity begins.
10. Some FAX Modems support both the EIA standard Class 1 and
the defacto standard Class 2 modes of operation. STraight FAX!
2.00 and higher supports both modes of operation. Recently the
EIA approved the Class 2 standard, however it is very different
from the defacto Class 2 standard that has been in use. The
official EIA Class 2 standard is known as Class 2.0, to avoid
confusion.
STraight FAX! 2.20 does not support Class 2.0. The only FAX
Modem that supports Class 2.0 to the best of our knowledge is
the US Robotics Courier HST FAX Modem. Older Courier HST FAX
Modems mat require an upgrade to support Class 2.0, however the
Courier HST FAX Modems also support the Class 1 standard.
Class 2.0 support is being evaluated for support in a future
version of STraight FAX!.
If the FAX Modem supports both Class 1 and the defacto Class 2
modes (such as the Supra FAX Modem Plus, Supra V.32/V.32bis and
Zoom FAX Modems), then both modes should be tried, as one mode
may provide better results over the other. As of STraight FAX!
2.10, separate parameters are available for setting the FAX
Class for sending and receiving.
11. Phone Line wires should be isolated from AC power cords and
other wiring to minimize phone line noise and interference.
Phone line noise can disrupt FAX communications or cause poor
quality FAX transmission.
12. FAX Modem vendors upgrade the firmware in the FAX Modem to
increase compatibility and to add additional features. Please
check the firmware version in your FAX Modem using one or more
of the following commands, sent from a terminal program:
ATI3
AT+FREV? (Class 2 FAX Modems only)
Note: the command to return the firmware revision be different
for some FAX Modems, please refer to the FAX Modem manual if the
above commands are not successful in returning the firmware
revision.
It is strongly recommended that you have the latest firmware
revision for your FAX Modem. Please contact the FAX Modem
manufacturer for firmware upgrade availability and pricing.
13. FAX Modems that also support 14400 baud V.32bis data
communications may also support 14400 baud (V.17) FAX
communications. Most FAX Machines are limited to 9600 baud FAX
communications. Unless it is known that the remote FAX
Machine/Modem supports 14400 baud, it is recommended that the
FAX Baud Rate in the Modem Preferences be set to 9600 baud. In
many cases this will reduce the handshaking time between the FAX
devices.
14. Printing FAX and Image files from STraight FAX! requires
that a version of GDOS be installed. There are several versions
of GDOS from Atari and also a number of GDOS replacement
programs. The latest version of GDOS from Atari is Speedo GDOS,
which is recommended for use with STraight FAX!. If Speedo GDOS
is not available, the next best version of GDOS from Atari is
Font GDOS. Font GDOS is available for downloading from many
on-line services for just the cost of the download.
Printing with GDOS may require a large amount of free RAM,
depending on the printer driver in use and the paper size.
Systems with less than 2 megabytes of RAM may be unable to print
due to a lack of available RAM. On systems with 2 megabytes of
RAM, it may be necessary to disable nonessential AUTO folder and
Desk Accessory programs to free sufficient RAM for use by GDOS.
15. NewSTar Technology Management and Toad Computers have co-developed
a public domain utility called SysInfo 2.10. SysInfo will test a
FAX Modem and determine the FAX Classes supported, manufacturer and
other capabilities of the FAX Modem. SysInfo will also test the
computer and operating system to determine the exact configuration
of the computer. The results of these tests are then written to an
ASCII text file that can be GEMailed to us for examination to determine
what may be causing a particular problem.
SysInfo 2.10 (SYSIN210.ZIP) is available from our support BBS
and from the Atari ST support areas on major on-line services.
The file listing for SysInfo 2.10 on GEnie is listed below:
Number: 34383 Name: SYSIN210.ZIP
Address: TOAD Date: 941108
Approximate # of bytes: 59776
Number of Accesses: 169 Library: 7
Description:
This is version 2.10 of SYSINFO, our system/modem tester! This version
fixes a few bugs and adds the ability to parse your STFAX.INF file,
telling you (and us) everything you need to know about your STraight FAX!
installation! But this is not just for folks with STraight FAX! It also
works with or without a modem and can tell you a great deal about your
computer's setup -- disk drives, auto folders, TOS version, cookies, etc.
A favorite download on the Internet and here on GEnie. Works on all
ST's and has a cool GEM interface -- even digital sound effects. If
you haven't seen this 'til now, you should get it!

Try changing the setting of the Page Offset in the STraight FAX! Speedo GDOS
driver with the Printer Drivers utility that comes with Speedo GDOS. The
Page Offset change the effective printable area from 8.5" x 11.00" to
8.0" x 10.5" on a letter sized page.
Make sure the Page Offset setting is the same for the FAX driver as they are
for your normal printer driver. If this has no effect, check to see if the
same thing occurs under Speedo GDOS 4.xx.
To: F.LAWRENCE2
The primary use of the STraight FAX! Manager CPX works along with the
STraight
FAX! Manager TSR (STFAXMGR.PRG in the AUTO folder) to allow selecting the
file
path/name of FAX files generated by any of the STraight FAX! printer drivers
on the fly. The CPX allows the user to select the file path/name just before
printing in an application to a FAX file. The CPX is not used if all you
want to do is to send an ASCII Text/IMG/PCX/GEM/J??/PI3/PC3/First Word file
in the STraight FAX! program, nor does it affect receiving FAXes.
Please check the chapters in the STraight FAX! manual on Printer Drivers,
STraight FAX! Manager CPX and also the STraight FAX! Manager CPX section of
the 2.10 manual addendum and the README.TXT file that comes with the 2.20
upgrade for additional info on using the CPX.
To: THOMPSON2,
Try deleting all the events in the Event Scheduler that have been completed.
To: W.TURCZYNSK1,
Lack of available free RAM can cause problems when printing FAXes in STraight
FAX!. The GDOS printer drivers (with the exception of the SLM Laser Driver)
do not provide any specific status back to the application that prints via
GDOS. Some older drivers may even try to allocate RAM past the end of free
RAM, i.e. into the Video RAM area.
Try freeing up some RAM by disabling a desk accessory or AUTO folder TSR
program when using Geneva or NeoDesk.
Also, NeoDesk has options to free itself from RAM when it runs an
application.
This can be used to gain back RAM when STraight FAX! is running.
> Whew! Just looked at my original v2.20 disk! I just noticed all these

The files on the 2.20 Upgrade Master Disk should have a date of 08-27-94 at
2:20a (i.e. the release date and version number as the time), with the
exception of the folders and the installed STFAX.PRG.
To: S.BLACKBURN,
The ability to select between the standard AES 3.30 or higher submenus and
simulated submenus was added in STraight FAX! 2.20. If an older AES than
3.30 is in use with version 2.20, the Submenus Check Box will be hidden from
view in the General Preferences, since it has no appicability with older
AES versions.
>Why is that and how can I get it to do it all the time? (Pop downward that

To: L.BUDNICK,
The MultiTech FAX Modems have worked with STraight FAX! in Class 2 mode.
These FAX Modems require a one time programming of a special MultiTech
command to select the proper bit ordering of data as it is received from
the FAX modem. This command is documented in the manual/release notes.
> 1) What is the cost of your current software release?
STraight FAX! lists for $109.95 (US), however it is available for a street
price ranging from $80 to $90 via Atari dealers and mail order companies.
> 2) Is it possible to order this directly from you via EMail here on GEnie?
No, but you can order it from Toad Computers, 1-800-448-TOAD.
> 3) Will your software work with a system configured with
> Neo4/Geneva/SpeedoGDOS5 and a CyRel graphics card? If so, what
> resolutions will you support and how many colors?
STraight FAX! has been tested with NeoDesk 4/4, Geneva and Speedo GDOS 4/5.
STraight FAX! is a VDI compliant application, so it will operate in any
resolution, with a minimum of 640 pixels in width. The GEM AES supports up
to 16 colors for objects (buttons, icons), which is what STraight FAX!
allows.
As for a displayed FAX, it will be in black and white, since FAXes are single
plane bitmapped graphics. We have not tested STraight FAX! with a CyRel
card, but I suspect there are users of STraight FAX! that have used it the
CyRel card. It has been tested on TT's with a Moniterm and Crazy Dots and
in various Falcon resolutions.
> 4) In addition to STFAX software, are there any other software or
> hardware requirements needed to use the FAX software? If so, please
> explain.
No other hardware/software is required other than STraight FAX!, your FAX
modem and a modem cable to send FAXes. STraight FAX! does require GDOS to
print FAXes directly. However, FAX files can be exported to a number of
different formats and then imported/printed with any application that will
read these formats (i.e. IMG, PCX, TIFF, EPS). A number of small PD patch
programs are available and recommended to correct problems in TOS with
respect to the serial ports. The master disk includes patches supplied by
Atari, but there are PD patches that work much better.
STraight FAX! comes with a number of printer drivers to allow printing to
disk pages of a document as FAX files, for FAXing in STraight FAX!. Drivers
for Calamus 1.09n/SL, Pagestream 1.8x/2.x, That's Write 2/3, Original/Font/
Speedo GDOS and GEM View import/export/print are included.
STraight FAX! can import directly ASCII Text, Monochrome Degas, IMG and
PCX files, as well as GEM Metafiles (requires GDOS) and First Word/Plus and
Word Writer ST files and send these as part of a FAX.
To: M.WEILERT2,

The problem is due to the way Geneva is passing the keyboard state word in
a keyboard message. Most likely, the control/alternate/left shift/right shift
status is not being reported properly. Since this operates properly under
Atari's single tasking AES and MultiTOS AES, the problem can only be
corrected
in Geneva.
To: T.CARMAN,
> I'm having a bit of trouble configuring STraight Fax as an accessory under
> Geneva. I have set the environment variable in the GEM.CNF file as per the

Please download SysInfo 2.10. It will display the values of all of the
environment variables (EV's) installed. Be sure to SysInfo with Geneva
installed and also under normal TOS with GEMENV. With Geneva running, it
may be necessary to disable GEMENV in the AUTO folder.
BTW, under Geneva, STraight FAX! can also be auto-run as a normal program.
This
allows the normal GEM menu bar to be used.
To: MUSE,
> the scheduler is always activated when I'm using STFAX under Geneva. This

when
> multitasking?
The Schedule FAX button defaults to selected under Multitasking AES versions
(Geneva, MultiTOS, Magic) and if the program is installed as a desk
accessory.
The reason for this is that in multitasking environment, the program will
not display any alert boxes if a FAX fails and if the number is busy, the
scheduler will re-schedule the transfer at a later time depending on the
Redial Wait time rather that waiting with a Send FAX Status dialog onscreen.
BTW, the short delay is due to the fact that the FAX scheduler will check
every 30 seconds to see if a scheduled FAX is ready to be sent. If Auto
Receive is enabled, the check would occur once every 2 seconds.
To: VORTEXT,
> how do I find what version of the firmware I have?
SysInfo 2.10 will determine the version number of the FAX Modem firmware.
You can also try sending the commands ATI3, ATI4, AT+FREV?, AT+FMDL? and
AT+FMFR? from a terminal program.
To: K.VANDELLEN,
The 2.20 Upgrade disk requires that 2.10 has been previously installed in
a folder or floppy disk.
Just copy the STFAX.PRG and HELP.DAT from the 2.20 Upgrade Disk to the
previous installation directory. Copy the STFAXMGR.CPX from the CPX
directory on the 2.20 Upgrade Disk to your current CPX folder.

What are the exact symptoms of the conflict with the color CyRel drivers?
We have tested STraight FAX! in monochrome, 4 color, 16 color, 256 color
and True Color (65536 colors) modes on the ST, STe, TT030, Mega STe and
Falcon030. The only problem we have ever seen with a thrird party video
card was with the Crazy Dots in the 256 color mode, and this only occured
when exporting a FAX file to another format (such as Image). The problem
in this case was due related to one of the VDI blit commands, we changed
the way we did the blit (i.e. a memory to memory blit) to another version
of the blit call and it then worked under the Crazy Dots.
> I can't seem to get a ascii to fax to show up as legible when trying to

Check out the release notes. If would also be helpful if you downloaded
SysInfo 2.10 and sent me a copy of the output report in GEMail. The most
likely problem is a flow control problem. Get Serial Fix 2.0, its the
only serial port patch we recommend at this time. It fixes problems on
all TOS versions from 1.00 through 3.06. Also try increasing the size
of the output I/O Buffer in the Modem Preferences.
Also, try pre-viewing a FAX page before sending it to make sure the problem
is not in the generation of the FAX file itself (it usually is not).

Was the other side running STraight FAX! or another FAX software program?
What FAX Class was being used on both sides? Try Class 2 and make sure that
Serial Fix 2.0 is installed. Flow Control may be the problem. Also, try
sending 9600 baud instead of 14400 baud.
To: R.SNYDER6,
Do you have an example of the FAX file (.J??) created with Calamus. If you
can, please send the FAX file to me in GEMail as an attached file.
BTW, in version 2.20 you can pre-view graphic files listed in the File List
and then return to the File List (F5/Send Multiple) and proceed with the send
if the FAX files looked OK.

I did set his software to Class 2, but it turned out to be a flow control

Charles -
Longlines are what happen if you have your word wrap set to some high value
(over
74) and then you save with no formatting (*SN). This prevents GEnie's editor
from
reformatting for us. The result is an ugly wrapping of shortlines, which
does not
even lend itself to easy reformatting.
If you are going to save with no formatting, please be sure to set
your wordwrap to some value below 76 (and reformat quotes if
necessary). Many of use use viewers or other capture buffers which
have a window slider and do not have a full 80 character screen width.
We have our GEnie settings for a screen width less than 80 and the
result is that your longlines perform as described above.
Also: posts of over 10K should probably go into the library.
Other than that :-) thanks for the information!

Actually, if you're running Geneva, M-Tos, or the like, you can send a file to
a fax, run the CPX, the "Save" button turns to "Send" and it will cause your
printed fax files to be copied to STraight Fax's file list, activate STraight
Fax to start the fax file transfer.

KV> Support would be rather difficult if people pose questions here,

I hesitate to respond at the risk of sounding ungrateful for Charles'
contributions and for his support here; so first, let me say that I am happy
to see the support wherever it might go, here or in the library.
But, to clarify..
When I expressed my opinion about posts of over 10K going into the library, I
wasn't commenting about the part of the post which was directed at answering
the accummulation of people's questions here.
The remark was about the 18K (which I saved, by the way, which also shows I
_do_ appreciate the support) divided between two messages and was not response
to queries. The larger portion was entitled: STraight Fax 2.20 Tech Support
Notes. The second portion gave information about the latest SysInfo,
ToadFest, and upgrading. It was attached to the message which was responding
to questions.
Tons more people see things and download them from the libraries than from the
BB; and it would be valuable for a file containing that information to be

I would like to know what the reccommended settings should be on my systems.
I have A TT with tos 3.05 4/4 megs ram supra fax v.32 9600 baud modem it's
using modem port 1
Do I select "Drop DTR to hang up"? Do I select "CD" ? Do these settings change
if I use modem port 2 ? Is there a program that allows me to use Aladdin on
modem port 2?
My other system is a Mega 4 ST, tos 1.04
What flow control do I select Do I select "Drop DTR to hang up"? Do I select
"CD" ?
The problem I seem to have receiving SOME faxes, is that as soon as Straight
Fax answers the phone; the modem hangs up. Someone told me once that this is
because the other party is sending their fax in the wrong mode. They were able
to receive the fax that I couldn't.
So are there some special settings that are required to receive faxes sent in
the wrong mode?

Howdy,
Sak,
If you have your modem configured with the &D2 command you can select "Drop
DTR to hang up" to accomplish hanging up. This will work for any computer
software that can toggle the DTR, and once an ON-to-OFF transition occurs, the
modem will hang up. In order for this to _really_ work properly, your modem
should be configured with the &C1 command as well as the &D2 command
(AT&C1&D2)...this gives your software the ability to completely control the
modem's on/off line functions using the computer's hardware.
If you used the &D1 command, the modem will switch from the data mode to the
'command' mode when the DTR is dropped/transitioned.
If you used the &D3 command in your modem, it will 'initialize' when the DTR
is dropped/transitioned.
Sorry, this is probably worse than reading the manual. <grin>
Best regards,
Wally

Serial Fix let's you set this and fixes some shortcommings in TOS's comms

However, when I try to use it, I get a dialog stating that STFax 2.20 is

Do you have any ideas?

I am not familiar with the Motorola UDS Modems. It would be helpful if you
sent (or post here) the Modem Information section of the SysInfo 2.10 report.
From that I will know a little bit more about this FAX Modem.
Q. Approximately how long does it take when activating Auto Receive before the

The part of the Speedo GDOS FAX driver that we wrote is the part that takes a
raster bitmap and saves it as a FAX file. The routine that does this is
actually linked into all of the different FAX printer drivers on the master
disk. The part of the Speedo GDOS driver that generates the page bitmap was
written by Atari, and we have no detailed information on how it operates.
It would be difficult to speculate as to why the Speedo FAX driver is
operating this way without more information on how a Speedo driver generates a
page bitmap and how Papyrus Gold uses Speedo GDOS.
> I also tried putting the MOD file in the Papyrus directory, the > Printer
directory and the MOD directory. None of them helped.
Several months ago, we were told about an application calle Papyrus that
needed a FAX printer driver. We contacted the developers at ROM software in
Germany and eventually obtained the necessary information to write an external
printer driver for Papyrus, i.e. the STFAX.MOD file. We tested this on a pre-
release version of Papyrus we were sent and it worked fine.
When Papyrus Gold was later released, we again tried the STFAX.MOD driver,
however it no longer worked. ROM Software had changed the way their external
drivers for Papyrus Gold operated vs. the pre-release version. However,
Papyrus Gold now supported printing via Speedo GDOS, which provides another
method of printing, as you have tried above.
At this point we will have to re-establish communications with ROM Software
via the Internet and see if they can provide us support for updating the MOD
driver to support Papyrus Gold.

On a TT030, I would recommend using either Modem 2 or Serial 2, as these
serial ports use the SCC chip, which is better than the MFP chip at serial
I/O.
If you use Modem 1, then installing Serial Fix 2.0 is recommended to correct
the bugs in the way TOS handles the RTS/CTS flow control.
> Do I select "Drop DTR to hang up"? Do I select "CD" ? Do these settings

There is some sort of patch for Aladdin to allow it to use the SCC based
ports, look in the Aladdin topic here in the ST RT for details.
> What flow control do I select Do I select "Drop DTR to hang up"? Do I select
> "CD" ?
Drop DTR to Hangup will drop the DTR signal to the Modem to force it to hang
up. Use this option if your modem supports this (most do) and if the serial
port and RS-232 cable have the DTR signal available and connected.
The Check CD option will simply look to see if a Carrier Detect is present
before initializing the FAX Modem. All FAX Modems have a CD signal, but again
use this only if the serial port and modem cable has the CD signal.
Again, use RTS/CTS flow control as long as you have the Serial Fix 2.0 patch
installed and the serial port and modem cable has the CTS signal.
> My other system is a Mega 4 ST, tos 1.04
Your STraight FAX! software license permits use on one system only. You must
choose which one to install the software on, i.e. the TT030 or the Mega ST4.

There is no such thing as a wrong mode, please refer to the tech notes I
posted last week and download the SysInfo 2.10 program and send me the ASCII
report in GEMail.
Some FAX Modems (Rockwell based) that support Caller ID (not Supra, but Zoom
and PC Logic) have a bug in the firmware that causes the modem to hang up
immediately after answering if Caller ID is enabled. If this is the case,
disable Caller ID and then contact the modem vendor for a firmware ROM
upgrade.

We do not recommend using any other patches for the serial port besides Serial

(Falcon) and Bconmap 2 as listed in the tech notes posted last week.
I will pass this on to Dave Troy at Toad Computers.

The contents of your master disk apper to be correct.
To: ST.WALLY,
STraight FAX! takes care of setting all the proper AT command switches during
the initialization of the FAX Modem. The settings of these AT command switches
in the FAX Modem's firmware has no effect, as the modem is reconfigured as
needed based on all of the options selected in the Modem, Dialing and Receive
FAX preferences.

Ok Charles, My TT is the system that I have ST Fax installed on and use 99% of
the time. If I detect a problem on the TT I try it on My mega 4 to see what
happens. The two systems are networked with the midi ports and modem ports and
printer ports.
I tried to Receive a fax 6 times on my TT, modem port 1, serial fix installed,
supra 9600 fax modem V.32, while playing with the class1 and class 2 select
buttons in the Modem and receive fax preferences. nothing seemed to work.
Every time I tried different settings the modem would answere the phone then
hand up or it would answer the phone and sit there then time out and hang up.
So I tried on my Mega and it did the same thing. It was a very important fax!
The funny thing is This is not a common problem, however it has happened
before. Usually I don't have any problems receiving faxes.
Your comment about the user ID being selected could be the case...I'll check
it out. and in the mean time I'll F-Mail you the text file results from

To: L.BUDNICK,
The problem you are having creating FAXes with ASCII text characters in them
with the CyRel graphics card VDI drivers installed is due to the way the CyRel
driver modifies an internal VDI command in TOS called vro_cpyfm. The CyRel
driver apparently expects the memory for the destination of a blit call (which
is what the vro_cpyfm call performs) to be located on the CyRel card. This is
not the way that the vro_cpyfm call was defined by Atari/DRI.
STraight FAX! uses the vro_cpyfm call in a number of places (36 to be
exact). The exact situation where you have observed a problem with the CyRel
drivers is when it blits a character from the bitmap of one of the FAX fonts
to a memory area used to construct a line of text for the FAX page. This blit
operation is totally independent of the screen resolution, since it always
involves blitting from one single plane (monochrome) bit map (i.e. the font)
to another single plane bit map. There is no reason a third party graphics
driver should modify the way this VDI call operates.
I am not sure of this will make any difference, but since you have a TT030
with TT RAM, try running STraight FAX! with the TT flags disabled and also
with them enabled. The CyRel driver _may_ operate if the blit is from ST RAM
and not TT RAM. Please try this and let me know if it makes any difference.
BTW, some may ask why STraight FAX! would use a VDI graphics call that does
not write to the screen. The reason is quite simple, this is what the
vro_cpyfm call was designed for (at least in one of its source->destination
modes). It allows pasting an arbitrary sized rectangle from an aribrtrary set
of coordinates from an arbitrary sized bitmap into a destination bitmap of
arbitrary size and arbitrary destination coordinates. This works quite well
in the case of pasting characters from a bitmap font. Using this call also
allows users with computers with Blitter chips installed to take advantage of
the power of the Blitter chip, since it will perform most of this task.
One other suggestion (which may or may not work). Try installing a third
party screen accelerator such as Warp 9 or NVDI 2/3. It is possible (assuming
these screen accelerators will operate with the external graphics card), that
the screen accelerator might intercept the VDI commands from the graphic card
driver and perform the graphics operation in a compatible method.

I have run using the mono mode on the CyRel card without any problems. It

Al,
BTW, Warp9 nor NVDI will work with the CyRel board in color mode. This is not
an issue, as the board provides the VDI acceleration. Also, the CyRel card

To: L.BUDNICK,
I suspect that in the monochrome mode the CyRel driver does not affect the
vro_cpyfm () VDI call. Its unfortunate that the driver modifies the way this
call operates in the 256 color mode. One of the things that programs and
programmers depend on is that the operating system calls do what they are
documented to. In this case the call in question works fine with Atari's VDI
in place. There is little that we can do when a third party TSR changes the
way an operating system call works.
From our perspective, we cant modify a perfectly working program to allow it
to operate in a redefined (while not on purpose) environment without risking
breaking the program for everyone else.
We will do what we can to work with Cybercube on letting them know the exact
conditionw where the modified vro_cpyfm () call is creating problems and
hopefully this will lead to an updated CyRel driver in the near future.

How long as the time out taken? Did the Modem make get a pick up
(stop ringing), did it get a connection or did it time out trying to start the
first page? Did STraight time out or did the other end? A time out can come
from either end, from your modem, or the software. At the moment I don't
